In the eyes of King George VI |佐治六世眼下的風景
2023
ink and colour on paper
38 x 147cm|50 x 181cm (framed)

This painting depicts the view from the statue of King George VI in Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens. The statue has stood in the park since 1958, commemorating the centenary of Hong Kong's founding (1841–1941). In its early years, the park served as a “botanical transit station”. The British would collect unknown plant species from China or their East Asian colonies, planting them in the park for storage and cultivation before transporting them back to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Garden, the private botanical gardens of the British Royal Family at the time. Although the park was renamed ‘Taishō Park’ by the Japanese during the WWII and suffered extensive destruction of its plantings, many non-native trees introduced by the British still thrive within its grounds today.
