The “Tree Portrait” series is inspired by the idea that trees can also act as monuments. Trees have a long lifespan, and the trees in cities witness the many urban developments, social events, and people’s lives across the generations. Each tree has its own and unique form due to their organic growth as living organisms, and some become more recognizable and memorable than the architectural landmarks around them because of their appearance and connection with the times. Tang regards trees in the city as “witnesses” of history, and paints portraits of them as memorials to that history.
